The sculpture by Filippos Bourbo invite us to take a journey into the future by returning to a past when humanity directly experienced itself as not separate from the divine. This future was prophesized by the ancient ancestors of the shamans and sages who shared their sacred wisdom with Filippos. The Indigenous traditions as well as Eastern Esoteric teachings reveal what Quantum physics confi rm through scientifi c research: All matter is composed of swirling, ecstatic vibrations of light. The Mayans are masters at documenting astrological cycles. They say that humanity is currently in the midst of taking a biological quantum leap towards becoming Homo Luminous-Beings who are naturally able to perceive this Light in all matter.

blankFilippos’ metaphysical raptures in stone, wood, copper, glass, bronze, petrifi ed coral, silver and gold show us that Spirit is at once contained and yet fl ying free within form. They speak to us not as abstract, intellectual scenarios rather from that one illuminated Source that infuses all matter. The symbols, metaphors, and healing gems that comprise his powerful body of work reveal a sacred dimension of life. These iconic fi gures can serve as medicine for our heart, mind and soul.

He uses as his signature the Hopi symbol for balance within oneself in relationship to Nature. This balance characterizes all of his sculptures: From the classic figures of angels and centaurs, to the geometric spheres and astrological discs, to the sea inspired series of spirals and cones culminating in the current series: “The Oracle: Universal Language” each of his pieces possess the power to arouse in us a primal desire to experience this natural equanimity.

Filippos feels that he was a sculptor in a previous life. In this lifetime his soul choose to incarnate in a country renown for its mythic monuments to the Gods; Volos, Greece. As a young child he delighted in exploring the ancient caves held within the marble mountains near his home. These caves were a womb of awakening to his present life’s calling as a sculptor. “I saw forms in the stalactites and stalagmites and this refreshed my memory.” Once the memory was refreshed he needed to rediscover the technique. At 17 years old Filippos entered the Pythagoras Art Institute in Thesaloniki where he was given a foundation of all things visual through photography, graphics, goldsmith, life drawing, and anatomy. He spent his summers on the islands of Tinos, Paros and Mykonos to apprentice with local marble craftsmen. He completed his classical training with archeology and ancient Greek sculpture and jewelry at the National Museum of Archeology in Athens.

Simultaneously during this classical training his memory was further awakened to the metaphysical dimension through the books of Herman Hesse, Dostoevsky, Jack Kerouac, Krishnamurti and Carlos Castaneda. Their teachings initiated a quest to discover the ‘traces of an ancient vanished wisdom’. In 1990 Filippos embarked upon a sacred artist’s pilgrimage to ten countries whose civilizations produced megalithic sculptures, awe inspiring temples and revered stones and wood as living, breathing entities.

“My first connection to a spiritual center was Delos, Greece.” Delos was the spiritual and financial center of the ancient Western world. It is a site sacred to the goddess Isis and the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo. On this journey he discovered his true voice as a sculptor. “What compels me as an artist is my desire to become more of my true self.”

Looking at his sculptures we can see that what he has discovered about himself is that he is a messenger revealing the timeless universality of all cultures through their shared sacred symbols. On his quest he discovered the common links between the sacred geometry, myths and astrological systems from Central America to Africa to Mongolia. For example, while exploring the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, he noticed similarities between the faces of these Asian statues with those of pre-Colombian America. In the sculpture by Filippos we are presented with a glimpse of humanity’s common heritage.

This unity in diversity theme appeals to many curators, corporations, and private collectors all over the world. Filippos presented a solo show at the Galleri Nasional Indonesia in Jakarta and was included in the Dubai International Art Expo and the Florence Biennale. A corporation in Jakarta commissioned two pieces that are used at the entrance of the offi ce building to positively calibrate energy.

Inspirations for his work arrive in a variety of vehicles for Filippos. While learning bronze-forging techniques with masters in Cuernavaca and San Miguel de Allende in Southern Mexico he also traveled with Huichol shamans who use peyote as a focal point in ceremonies. During one of these ceremonies Filippos was given a dream in which he saw a green window opening up in the heart. “The Womb” is the materialization of this vision.

Onyx also inspires Filippos. “I love onyx because of its ability to be transparent to light.” Filippos is unique as a sculptor due to the variety of materials that form his creations, yet onyx is included within every series. “I like the feeling of onyx”. When inspirations arrive he is at once the creator and the disciple: “A log is not a dead thing; it is very much alive, just temporarily disconnected from its’ roots. I give it new roots and new life. It is vital to show respect for the material. I merge my energy with the energy within the medium leaving room for Mother Nature to come help me, reassuring me that I’m doing the right thing!”

Where does a man whose art expresses the eternal in matter call home? Bali, Indonesia. Bali is similar to Greece as it is known as the ‘island of the Gods’. Filippos arrived on Bali in 1990 to learn wood carving techniques and immediately felt it was his home. “I feel the natural nourishment of mother on Bali. It is so lush and green. This allows me to discover more of who I am. The culture and people are very welcoming. The people are open. It is full of art-from the simple daily offerings to high art.” Life is art on Bali.

When an interviewer asked Filippos what advice he would give to a young sculptor his response serves all of us who desire to joyfully create our lives: “To create in peace within one’s self; to enjoy the journey to the fullest.”

I am one with god, I love without need, I have no sense of sin, I am free from fear of death, I act always from the heart, I feel peace by detach from pain, what I think becomes my reality, I am true wealth present in the joy of now, I am happiness with no dependency on the ego.
